Reporting to the Director of Student Services, the Student Services and Counseling Officer performs a variety of tasks related to the Student Services responsibilities at the University of Calgary in Qatar (UC-Q).
The primary focus of this position will be to provide personal, academic and career counseling to individual students or groups of students and to develop & deliver student wellness, leadership & student success programs.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•Provides professional and appropriate personal and academic counseling to students
•Fosters cooperative and trusting relationships with students, faculty and staff to help develop a student centered, caring environment
•Acts as a resource to other units in the areas of student wellness
•Interprets admissions policies and academic regulations and responds to general questions about the UC-Q's campus life, academic programs and requirements
•Makes referrals to other UC-Q offices as appropriate
•Stays current with developments related to student wellness, campus life and student counseling
•Provide professional psychotherapeutic and educational counseling services for individual students, groups and in the classroom
•Function as independent, responsible professionals in accordance with professional codes of ethics and the traditional duties and responsibilities of scholars, consulting and collaborating with academic and administrative leaders
•Demonstrate range, depth, and flexibility in responding professionally to client needs for preventive, developmental or therapeutic counseling in order to facilitate the clients taking full advantage of educational and other opportunities presented by the university. Issues might include educational, vocational, personal, interpersonal and social concerns. Services may be direct, involving immediate contact with the client, or indirect, involving consultation with third parties
•Administer and interpret psychological testing as appropriate to the clients concern, for example in career counseling
•Assess individual students’ mental states as an aid to decision-making by administrators, for example in cases of non-academic misconduct
•Provide information to students and members of the public to facilitate the appropriate use of on-campus and off-campus resources
•Respond to mental health emergencies and other crises, as appropriate and upon request
